Children’s Martial Arts training…

Dynamic, exciting and fun!

At our Kids Martial Arts classes in Winchester, your children won’t just learn Martial Arts. They’ll learn resilience, team-working, self belief, the power of having a positive attitude and the discipline and self control to keep going when things get tough. Those children who join our junior coaching team also learn public speaking, leadership, planning and analysis which in futher education and work are sought after skills.

Yes, your children will learn self protection and self defence skills through their practice of Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing, or Judo. They’ll learn how to avoid trouble, to de-escalate situations, but if all that fails, they’ll learn the necessary skills to successfully defend themselves.

Our highly trained coaches are specialists in teaching Martial Arts classes for children and helping them to succeed in Martial Arts.

Martial Arts training for Kids with us is very different, it’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s dynamic and as a life skill is invaluable. Teaching focus and discipline in all areas of life along with some very useful physical skills.

Recognition and celebrating success

Children who learn a Martial Art in Winchester with us are recognised for their effort and achievement. Like all children who train with us, this helps to motivate them to be recognised for their effort. They can earn weekly, monthly and annual awards.

All achievements in our students are recognised, not only for those who are physically talented but also for those who have shown progress in other areas. For example: making progress on a difficult technique, being polite, hardworking, thoughtful towards others, having shown good attendance or working well as part of a team.

Children’s long-term development

Our children’s martial arts classes are organised by age and ability, allowing us to focus on what each stage of development needs most. This approach helps every child learn in a way that suits their level of understanding, confidence and physical development.

Our philosophy, supported by both coaching experience and research into child development, is simple: children learn best when they train with others at a similar stage. In a school setting you wouldn’t place a 5-year-old and a 13-year-old in the same classroom expecting them to learn in the same way. Their attention span, coordination, confidence and learning style are all very different.

The same principle applies when learning martial arts. Younger children benefit from lessons that focus on coordination, balance, listening skills and basic movement patterns, while older students are ready to develop more technical skills, strategy and discipline in their training.

Long-term training in martial arts provides children with far more than just physical skills. Over time, consistent practice helps them develop important qualities such as perseverance, self-discipline and resilience. As they work through the belt system and gradually overcome new challenges, children learn the value of patience, effort and setting meaningful goals. Physically, long-term training improves coordination, balance, strength and overall fitness, while mentally it helps build confidence, focus and emotional control. Perhaps most importantly, martial arts provide a structured environment where children can develop respect for others, learn to handle setbacks positively and gain the self-belief that comes from steady progress. These benefits compound over the years, helping young students grow into confident, capable and well-rounded individuals.

The age specific advantage

By grouping children appropriately, we can deliver lessons that are engaging, well structured and suited to their stage of development. This helps students build confidence while progressing safely through the skills of the martial arts we teach, including Karate, Judo, Kung Fu and Kickboxing. Each child is able to develop at their own pace while enjoying the experience of training in a positive and supportive environment.

One of the major advantages of an age-specific curriculum is that children tend to learn more quickly and progress with greater confidence. Much like in school, students move into different groups as they grow older and develop greater physical awareness, concentration and understanding. At each stage we gradually increase the level of complexity, helping them refine their technique while continuing to build new skills and knowledge.

This structured approach to martial arts training has been shown to significantly improve both the rate of learning and the quality of progress. Children not only pick up new skills more efficiently, but they also retain what they learn far more effectively.

Alongside the physical techniques, students also develop valuable life skills through their training. These include respect for others, self-discipline, confidence, healthy habits, personal safety awareness and better decision-making. Over time, these qualities become just as important as the physical skills they develop, helping them grow both inside and outside the training hall.

What you learn in Kickboxing, Karate or Kung Fu classes?

Classes are always structured to optimise both safety and results. In addition to working on techniques, we focus on functional movement skills that include flexibility plus strength and conditioning exercises.

We combine the values traditional Japanese and Chinese Martial Arts with modern sports science to ensure that our Martial Arts classes use proven, leading methods for training and coaching. Consequently, this ensures that all members can achieve their very best from their own personalised Martial Arts training. This takes into account physical differences, psychology, biomechanics, physiology, nutrition and rates of maturation.

The lesson planning for each class changes on a weekly basis as we work though through our tried and tested curriculum. This helps the children learning a Martial Art in Winchester to cover all the necessary areas to help them to enhance their skills and knowledge and progress through belts. Our classes are structured to encourage a  confident ‘can do’ attitude and an understanding that we learn by making mistakes. It is our role as educators to work with you as parents to help make your children successful, not just in our Martial Arts classes, but especially in life.

We believe that all children’s activities should teach both personal development and physical literacy. We prove this by helping children learn that hard work equals achievement and achievement means success. This helps them to understand and shape their personal core values.

How to earn new belts

Members are also able to take part in regular tests within our school here in Winchester or at our club in Basingstoke. This allows them to earn their next belt, all the way to Black Belt in a transparent and fair way with family members observing the grading.

Our senior grading examiners have been qualified to conduct Black Belt gradings since 1993. During this time they have carried out many successful gradings in diverse Martial Arts such as Karate, Judo, Chinese Kickboxing and Kung Fu.

Our Judo Black Belt gradings are held under the auspices of a British Judo Association Senior Examiner.

What our members think

format_quoteMy kids have been attending Shin Gi Tai for the last 8 years and the whole family loves it! The coaches are all highly talented and make sure everything is age appropriate, with a healthy dose of fun thrown into each session. No two classes are ever the same with a blend of games, groundwork, karate, self defence and Kung fu. This gives the kids lots of variety and a chance to find something they really enjoy. I love the fact that my kids have a focus outside of school. Not only do they get to burn off excess energy from sitting in a classroom all day, but they learn to focus, listen and apply themselves each lesson with hard physical work to reach a long term end goal (their belts). They pick up lots of other skills, with an added bonus of making friends along the way. In the older classes the coaches emphasise the importance of taking responsibility for your own equipment and progression which is a great life lesson from a young age. My kids love getting involved to help support the fundraising events that Shin Gi Tai hosts which benefit local charities and I think it’s great my kids get to hear about people who are less fortunate and work together as a club to make a difference. I decided to try out kickboxing to loose a few pounds after my third child, and 4 years later I’m hooked and practising 3 different martial arts. The coaches are the masters of motivation! The club offers a no obligation trial session to everyone, so you have nothing to loose!format_quote

Rising Heroes: Children 4 – 6 Years old

Young Legends: Children 7 – 10 Years old

Today’s children, more than any other generation, spend much of their time sat down staring into a screen and consequently are not getting enough regular exercise or social skills development to keep them fit and healthy.

Our classes will help them to develop good habits of physical exercise to help them grow into healthy teens as they go through puberty. Our drills, activities and ‘games’ have been designed to disguise physical repetition, meaning that the kids are having fun, learning Martial Arts whilst helping their minds and bodies to keep active and healthy.

Self defence is an important skill that we practice, learning how to avoid danger or threats without having to rely on physical skills, although they do have those skills to fall back on, if absolutely necessary. We educate them on self protection online, including how to safely use social media and online gaming. The issue of playground bullying and the school expectations of this subject is always a firm favourite topic that we learn about in our Kids Karate classes.

Urban Warriors: 11 – 16 years old

Learning a Martial Art is not just about learning kicking and punching skills. It’s not just physical exercise, it teaches self protection and self defence skills, which for this age group are vital. At this age, children are more likely to need self defence skills to protect themselves against a potentially bigger and stronger, attacker.

Our Urban Warriors programme teaches self confidence and discipline, it builds self esteem and self worth. Our classes provide a supportive, friendly and positive alternative to the many undesirable alternatives that some of their peers may favour.
