What our members think

format_quoteMy kids have been attending Shin Gi Tai for the last 8 years and the whole family loves it! The coaches are all highly talented and make sure everything is age appropriate, with a healthy dose of fun thrown into each session. No two classes are ever the same with a blend of games, groundwork, karate, self defence and Kung fu. This gives the kids lots of variety and a chance to find something they really enjoy. I love the fact that my kids have a focus outside of school. Not only do they get to burn off excess energy from sitting in a classroom all day, but they learn to focus, listen and apply themselves each lesson with hard physical work to reach a long term end goal (their belts). They pick up lots of other skills, with an added bonus of making friends along the way. In the older classes the coaches emphasise the importance of taking responsibility for your own equipment and progression which is a great life lesson from a young age. My kids love getting involved to help support the fundraising events that Shin Gi Tai hosts which benefit local charities and I think it’s great my kids get to hear about people who are less fortunate and work together as a club to make a difference. I decided to try out kickboxing to loose a few pounds after my third child, and 4 years later I’m hooked and practising 3 different martial arts. The coaches are the masters of motivation! The club offers a no obligation trial session to everyone, so you have nothing to loose!format_quote

What you’ve always wanted to know about Children’s Martial Arts

What age can Children start Martial Arts?

We welcome children from age 4 upwards, with classes structured by age and ability to ensure safe and effective progress. We’ve found that at this age, they are starting to have better motor control and can following coaching points. Additionally, even if we wanted to, we’ve not found an insurer who would insure a 3 year year old, with 4 being the starting point.

Is Karate good for shy children?

In a nutshell yes, Martial Arts is excellent for helping shyer children build confidence, communication skills and self-belief in a supportive environment.

Many parents assume Martial Arts is only for loud, confident children who love being the centre of attention, but actually we often find the opposite. Some of the children who benefit the most are the quieter ones.

Karate helps shy children build confidence in a very natural way. It’s not about forcing them to suddenly become outgoing or making them speak in front of a room full of people. It’s about giving them small wins every single week and nurturing them to help them to develop.

Learning new skills, earning belts, improving focus, and seeing their own progress helps children start to believe in themselves. They stand taller, speak more clearly, and begin to feel more comfortable in social situations because they know they are capable.

The structure of Karate is also really helpful. Children know what to expect, there are clear rules, and they feel safe within that routine. That makes it much easier for shy children to settle in compared to chaotic team sports where they can feel lost or overlooked.

Karate also teaches respect, discipline, resilience, and how to handle challenges calmly. Over time, children often become more confident not just in class, but at school, with friendships, and in everyday life.

We’ve seen many children walk through the door barely making eye contact, hiding behind mum or dad, and within a few months they’re joining in confidently, smiling, and enjoying being part of the group. There was one little boy, who for the first six weeks as a 5 year old, his Dad had to come onto the Mats with him, week 7, the child told his Dad that he din’t need to come on with him. Fast forward 5 or 6 years and that shy little boy was an assistant coach and he also earned his Black Belt.

Confidence doesn’t happen overnight, but Karate gives children the environment to grow it properly—and that can make a huge difference for life.

Can a Parent watch a class? Should a parent watch their Child's class?

Absolutely! Parents are welcome to watch classes, and in many cases, we actively encourage it, especially when a child is new to Martial Arts.

For younger children, having a parent nearby during those first few sessions can make a huge difference to confidence and comfort. Starting something new can feel like a big step, and simply knowing Mum or Dad is there often helps children settle in faster and feel more secure.

That said, there is a balance.

Martial Arts is also about helping children develop independence, focus and confidence in themselves. Once they become comfortable, many children actually perform better when they are fully engaged in the class rather than checking every thirty seconds to see if their parent is still watching (a highly advanced skill mastered by nearly every 5-year-old).

We have a comfortable waiting area where parents can watch classes taking place in a relaxed environment, so you can stay involved without becoming the unofficial assistant instructor.

Should a parent watch every class? Not necessarily.

Is Martial Arts safe for a child to practice?

Yes when it is taught properly, Martial Arts is extremely safe for children and one of the best activities they can do for both physical and personal development.

The key is professional coaching, proper structure, and a safe training environment.

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy, children are taught in a controlled, age-appropriate way by highly experienced coaches with decades of teaching experience. Classes are designed around skill development, confidence building, discipline, and fitness but not aggression.

Our dedicated Martial Arts training centre is fitted with specialist cushioned flooring designed specifically for Martial Arts training, helping children train safely and comfortably while reducing unnecessary impact.

Children learn balance, coordination, focus, self-control, and respect for others. They are taught how to work with partners safely, follow instructions, and develop discipline from day one.

A good Martial Arts school should never be about children simply hitting things. It should be about learning control, building confidence, and developing life skills that stay with them far beyond the training hall. Traditional Chinese and Japanese Martial Arts are focussed on respect, discipline, self control, humility and perserverance to help practitioners develop good character.

At the heart of traditional Japanese Martial Arts is the philosophy of Bushido—the “Way of the Warrior.” Bushido is far more than fighting; it is a code of conduct built around values such as respect, honour, discipline, courage, honesty, self-control, and loyalty. These principles were originally followed by the Samurai and remain just as relevant today in helping children and adults develop strong character and a positive mindset.

In our Martial Arts training, we use these traditional values to help students grow not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Learning how to bow respectfully, show humility, persevere through challenges, and take responsibility for their actions builds confidence and resilience that carries into school, work, and everyday life. Martial Arts should never simply be about learning techniques—it should be about becoming a better, stronger, and more balanced person through the lessons Bushido teaches.

Many parents are surprised to find that children often become calmer, more focused, and more disciplined at home and at school after starting training.

Like any sport, safety comes down to the quality of coaching and the environment—but in the right club, Martial Arts is one of the safest and most valuable activities a child can do.

Why should Children train twice a week?

Training twice a week gives children the consistency they need to make real progress.

Like learning to read, play an instrument, or succeed at school, Martial Arts development comes from regular practice and not from doing it occasionally. One class a week is enough to introduce new skills, but two classes a week allows children to properly absorb, repeat, and improve those skills so they become natural. Sports science consistently shows that skill development, confidence, and physical adaptation improve far more effectively through regular weekly repetition rather than long gaps between sessions.

It also helps build confidence much faster. Children who train twice a week tend to settle into classes more quickly, develop stronger friendships, improve their focus, and progress through their belts with far more confidence and understanding.

Martial Arts is not just about learning techniques, it’s about developing discipline, resilience, fitness, and good habits. Regular attendance creates structure and routine, which is where the real long-term benefits come from.

We want children to feel they are part of something, not just occasionally visiting it. Training twice a week helps them become fully involved in the club, the culture, and the personal growth that Martial Arts brings.

Quite simply, consistency creates confidence and confidence creates results.

But my child isn't very sporty

Many children particularly at an early age haven’t yet developed their gross motor skills, as they age the gross and fine motor skills will improve. Until they hit puberty and then they’ll have a dip for a while before rebounding and being in a better place. Our head coach, Bryan, wasn’t sporty at all in school. Team sport like Football and Cricket he wasn’t good at. He was stopped from playing hockey because the PE Teacher thought that we was too dangerous to himself and others with a hockey stick. It wasn’t until he found Karate that found a ‘sport’ that wasn’t realiant on playing in a team, rather it depending upon individual effort. He joined with five of his friends and all five were quickly better than him in class and in gradings. They surpassed him in belt and skills, At month nine, the first of them stopped training, by the end of the year, he was the only one still training. Still finding Martial Arts practice hard to grasp but nonetheless, he kept turning up to class. After about six years he was awarded his Black Belt by Asano Sensei (the European Chief Instructor) and after that he carried his training on.

From that quiet shy 14 year old boy, the transformation to a Black Belt in Karate, winning national titles in competition, European silvers and then Gold and finally a Gold Medal in the World Championships in 2016. He started coaching 8 students in a tiny Ambulance hall in Devon, through to coaching on National and International courses. He became a coach educator and travels around the UK and European teaching Martial Arts coaches how to be better coaches and he regularlyt visits other Martial Arts clubs to conduct gradings or Belt Assessments. It truly was the ugly ducking turning into the Swan.

Martial arts is not about already being athletic; it is about building confidence, coordination, focus and resilience step by step in a supportive environment. Our classes are structured to help every child progress at their own pace, without pressure or comparison.

Is learning a Martial Art going to make my son or daughter aggressive or violent?

Not at all in our club. When taught properly, Martial Arts helps children become calmer, more disciplined and more respectful, not more aggressive.

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts, we teach children that Martial Arts is about self-control, respect and responsibility, not fighting. One of the first lessons every child learns is that Martial Arts should never be used to bully, show off or intimidate others.

Traditional Martial Arts are built around values such as discipline, courtesy, humility and self-control. Children learn how to manage frustration, stay calm under pressure and develop confidence without needing to prove themselves through aggression.

In fact, many parents find that shy children become more confident, and more energetic children become more focused and controlled. Martial Arts gives children a positive outlet for energy while teaching clear boundaries and consequences.

Confidence often reduces aggression—because children who feel secure in themselves usually feel less need to act out.

Our goal is not to create fighters. It is to help develop confident, respectful and resilient young people who know when to stand up for themselves—and more importantly, when not to.

Why do you split your children's classes by age?

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester, we divide our children’s classes by age group. We have Rising Heroes 4 – 6 years old, Young Legends 7 – 10 years old and Urban Warrior 11 – 16 years old. We have structured our classes now for over 30 years and we’ve done this historicallty because it allows us to systemise a methodical, logical and repeatable syllabus that was developed to be age appropriate. For example (1) self protection for a  child practicing Martial Arts aged between 4 – 6 years old could be looking at how to cross the road safely or to know the difference between a medical tablet and sweets whereas a 16 or 17 year learning self defence is likely to need online safety, awareness of self protection in a pub/nightclub as a very close range or  (2) a 7 year old child practicing Martial Arts is starting to develop fine motor skills, whereas a 14 or 15 year in a Martial Arts class, having gone through puberty, will have strength, agility and speed.

In addition our technical syllabus varies for each age group because of the differences in their body’s capability and also due to their emotional maturity and understanding. We start off with the younger children teachng fundamental movement and Martial Arts skills as they get older we introduce both new skil and refinements to the Martial Arts skills that they already know. In addition we teach them the theory behind the techniques which adds another layer of skill.

Rising Heroes: Children 4 – 6 Years old

This our program for chlldrem aged between 4 anf 6 years old. Our Rising Heroes curriculum is designed to help your child to develop their motor skills and physical coordination, listening and cognitive skills. Young children of this age have bundles of energy and enthusiasm, which we harness within a structured fun educational environment. We teach them fundamental Martial Arts techniques, the underlying skillset of strength and conditioning along with speed and agility also pass over onto other sports they might play.

Click here for more information on our programme for 4-6 year olds

Young Legends: Children 7 – 10 Years old

Our Martial Arts classes for 7 – 10 year olds, were developed for today’s children, who more than any other generation, spend much of their time sat down staring into a screen and consequently are not getting enough regular exercise or social skills development to keep them fit and healthy.

Our classes will help them to develop good habits of physical exercise to help them grow into healthy teens as they go through puberty. Our drills, activities and ‘games’ have been designed to disguise physical repetition, meaning that the kids are having fun, learning Martial Arts whilst helping their minds and bodies to keep active and healthy.

Self defence is an important skill that we practice, learning how to avoid danger or threats without having to rely on physical skills, although they do have those skills to fall back on, if absolutely necessary. We educate them on self protection online, including how to safely use social media and online gaming. The issue of playground bullying and the school expectations of this subject is always a firm favourite topic that we learn about in our Kids Karate classes.

Urban Warriors: 11 – 16 years old

Children taking part in our Martial Arts classes in Winchester for 11 – 16 year old discover that learning a Martial Art is not just about learning kicking and punching skills. It’s not just physical exercise,  Yes, it teaches self protection and self defence skills, which for this age group are vital. At this age, children are more likely to need self defence skills to protect themselves against a potentially bigger and stronger, attacker. We work with them to help understand how and why their body moves, the law as it results to self defence, how to be proactive in self protection. At this age they can really start to fine-tune their technical skills at a deeper level to help them on a life-long Martial Arts journey.

Our Urban Warriors programme teaches self confidence and discipline, it builds self esteem and self worth. Our classes provide a supportive, friendly and positive alternative to the many undesirable alternatives that some of their peers may favour.

What if my child isn't as good as the other children?

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy’s Winchester Dojo, children are encouraged to improve against their own personal best. Children are never compared to others.

Martial Art isn’t a competition, it’s a tool that should combine traditional the Martial Arts values with modern, professional coaching to create an environment where children feel supported, challenged and proud of their own progress. Over four decades of teaching has shown us that confidence isn’t built through pressure, competition or being scary. It’s built through encouragement, structure, consistency and small wins over time, all with a very healthy dose of fun.

Not every child walks into a class full of confidence — and that’s completely normal. Like adult’s every child is different in temperment. Some children are naturally outgoing. Others are quieter, more sensitive or take longer to settle into new environments. I remember one little boy, Daniel, joining us at 4 years old, for the first eight weeks his Dad had to come on the Mats with him, on Week 9 Daniel, told him that he didn’t need him to come onto the mats with him. About 8 years later, he acheived his Black Belt with us and went onto become a junior coach helping other children to become as good as him.

At Shin Gi Tai, our coaches are experienced in helping children progress at their own pace in a structured, supportive and encouraging environment. Children are never pressured to “be the best” or compare themselves to others. Instead, we focus on personal growth, resilience, respect and steady improvement. Over time, many parents tell us they notice positive changes not just in Martial Arts, but at school, socially and at home too.

Our Martial Arts classes for Children are split by age

Our Winchester children’s Martial Arts classes are split by age.

The Rising Heroes’ class is for 4-6 year olds.

Our Young Legends class is for 7-10 year olds.

The Urban Warriors class is for 11-16 year olds.

The age specific advantage

For nearly twenty years, we've been grouping children our children's Martial Arts classes appropriately by age groups. We can deliver lessons that are engaging, well structured and suited to their stage of development. This helps students build confidence while progressing safely through the skills of the martial arts we teach, including Karate, Judo, Kung Fu and Kickboxing. Each child is able to develop at their own pace while enjoying the experience of training in a positive and supportive environment.

One of the major advantages of an age-specific curriculum is that children tend to learn more quickly and progress with greater confidence. Much like in school, students move into different groups as they grow older and develop greater physical awareness, concentration and understanding. At each stage we gradually increase the level of complexity, helping them refine their technique while continuing to build new skills and knowledge.

This structured approach to martial arts training has been shown to significantly improve both the rate of learning and the quality of progress. Children not only pick up new skills more efficiently, but they also retain what they learn far more effectively.

Alongside the physical techniques, students also develop valuable life skills through their training. These include respect for others, self-discipline, confidence, healthy habits, personal safety awareness and better decision-making. Over time, these qualities become just as important as the physical skills they develop, helping them grow both inside and outside the training hall.

Children’s long-term development

Our children’s martial arts classes are organised by age and ability, allowing us to focus on what each stage of development needs most. This approach helps every child learn in a way that suits their level of understanding, confidence and physical development.

Our philosophy, supported by both coaching experience and research into child development, is simple: children learn best when they train with others at a similar stage. In a school setting you wouldn’t place a 5-year-old and a 13-year-old in the same classroom expecting them to learn in the same way. Their attention span, coordination, confidence and learning style are all very different.

The same principle applies when learning martial arts. Younger children benefit from lessons that focus on coordination, balance, listening skills and basic movement patterns, while older students are ready to develop more technical skills, strategy and discipline in their training.

Long-term training in martial arts provides children with far more than just physical skills. Over time, consistent practice helps them develop important qualities such as perseverance, self-discipline and resilience. As they work through the belt system and gradually overcome new challenges, children learn the value of patience, effort and setting meaningful goals. Physically, long-term training improves coordination, balance, strength and overall fitness, while mentally it helps build confidence, focus and emotional control. Perhaps most importantly, martial arts provide a structured environment where children can develop respect for others, learn to handle setbacks positively and gain the self-belief that comes from steady progress. These benefits compound over the years, helping young students grow into confident, capable and well-rounded individuals.

Recognition and celebrating success

Children who learn a Martial Art in Winchester with us are recognised for their effort and achievement. Like all children who train with us, this helps to motivate them to be recognised for their effort. They can earn weekly, monthly and annual awards.

All achievements in our students are recognised, not only for those who are physically talented but also for those who have shown progress in other areas. For example: making progress on a difficult technique, being polite, hardworking, thoughtful towards others, having shown good attendance or working well as part of a team.

What you learn in Kickboxing, Karate or Kung Fu classes?

Classes are always structured to optimise both safety and results. In addition to working on techniques, we focus on functional movement skills that include flexibility plus strength and conditioning exercises.

We combine the values traditional Japanese and Chinese Martial Arts with modern sports science to ensure that our Martial Arts classes use proven, leading methods for training and coaching. Consequently, this ensures that all members can achieve their very best from their own personalised Martial Arts training. This takes into account physical differences, psychology, biomechanics, physiology, nutrition and rates of maturation.

The lesson planning for each class changes on a weekly basis as we work though through our tried and tested curriculum. This helps the children learning a Martial Art in Winchester to cover all the necessary areas to help them to enhance their skills and knowledge and progress through belts. Our classes are structured to encourage a  confident ‘can do’ attitude and an understanding that we learn by making mistakes. It is our role as educators to work with you as parents to help make your children successful, not just in our Martial Arts classes, but especially in life.

We believe that all children’s activities should teach both personal development and physical literacy. We prove this by helping children learn that hard work equals achievement and achievement means success. This helps them to understand and shape their personal core values.
