High quality Martial Arts Coaching is our goal
At our Winchester based Martial Arts Academy, we insist on professionally qualified Martial Arts coaches on our mats with our members.
Unlike some franchises and chains of martial arts provides, we don’t use someone else’s good reputation to sell our classes. Nor do we use Martial Arts teachers who have only been training a short while, in some cases mere months or who aren’t properly trained or qualified as coaches. You will find that we have an excellent reputation for teaching high quality Martial Arts built up over 40+ years of training, competing and coaching at very senior international levels.
High quality Martial Arts Coaching is our goal. What this means, is that the students who train with us benefit from this in-depth knowledge and gain a greater insight into their own practice of the Martial Arts. Our highly qualified Martial Arts coaches will help you to enjoy and learn from your experience of practising a Martial Art.
Unlike qualifications designed primarily to prepare teachers for classroom education, Our Head Coach, Bryan’s postgraduate degree specialised in the science of Advanced Sports Coaching, including motor learning, biomechanics, coaching psychology, long-term athlete development and evidence-based coaching, all applied specifically to martial arts. This means every class is carefully structured around how children and adults learn most effectively, helping students develop skills more efficiently, build genuine confidence, remain motivated and enjoy long-term progression. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, lessons are adapted to suit different ages, abilities and learning styles, ensuring every member receives the support and challenge they need to achieve their full potential in a safe, enjoyable and professionally coached environment.
Externally checked
All the instructors are DBS checked to an enhanced level, first aid trained and properly insured. All students also are fully insured in their own right. In addition, you have the assurance that we are all fully qualified as Martial Arts Instructors by either the relevant National Governing Body or The Martial Arts Standards Agency, the body that promotes excellence and quality standards in the Martial Arts.

Training, Development and Welfare
Formal Teacher training
In addition to being highly qualified martial artists we have also undergone formal teacher training both within and external to the martial arts. We know that being a great martial artist is not enough, it is equally important to be a great teacher and to be able to communicate effectively with students of all ages and abilities, in a way that is best for them. We know this is the case, because our students give us this feedback regularly.
Ongoing Professional Development
We invest in the ongoing development and education of our coaches technically with regular senior coaching and coach education sessions on improving their Martial Arts / Fitness techniques and skills. In addition, our coaches learn Sport England’s recommended courses such as ‘Equity in your Coaching’ and ‘Long Term Athlete Development’ in order to help them help you better. We also hold regular coaching workshops for coaches to better develop their teaching skills, knowledge and ability to deliver that information to of our members. We attend Hampshire training courses such as Mental Health First Aider, LGBT+ training for equality alongside a number of other courses run by our County Sports partnership, EnergiseMe. We are advocates of UK Coachings range of courses and our coaches take advantage of our membership with UK Coaching to take part in their wide range of continuous professional development options.
Welfare Officers
Our welfare officers are there to ensure that we meet the highest possible standards for safeguarding and protecting. In addition to the required training from the respective National Governing Bodies, their training encompasses a wide range of holistic training for all-round member support and development.
