Keep them fit and healthy with high quality exercise.
Many children today, spend an an enormous amount of time playing with or using electronic devices. Entertained, yes without a doubt. But the upshot, of this, is that they simply are not getting enough regular high quality exercise to keep them either fit or healthy enough.
Our children’s Karate classes in Winchester will encourage them to develop good habits through physical exercise to help them develop into healthy teens as they go through puberty. Our drills, activities and ‘games’ have been developed to disguise physical repetition, meaning that the kids are having a great time, learning Martial Arts and Karate whilst simultaneously helping their minds and bodies to keep active, grow and be healthy. Note, for us as parents, Karate is great for tiring the children out ready for bed or at least some quiet time.
Many people want to learn Karate for self defence and self protection. Both of these are important skills that we work on; learning how to proactively avoid dangerous situations or threats without having to rely on physical skills. Although our members do have those skills to fall back on, if absolutely necessary. We also educate them in the world of online self protection, looking at social media, online gaming along with the use of technology. Attending our Winchester Karate classes, children will proactively learn and practice how to deal with playground bullying and also understand the school’s expectations concerning this.
At this age, it is a good idea to try many different sports and physical activities to help the all-round physical development of your child. Our coaches work together with the children to teach them about athletic performance, You’ll often see us practicing Gymnastics skills, Strength and conditioning drills, Yoga Asanas or speed agility and quickness drills to help to build a broad-base of those key fundamental skills used in kickboxing, close range sparring, throwing and groundwork. These are skills learnt from Karate, Chinese Kickboxing, Judo and Kung Fu. We have carefully chosen these Martial Arts to provide a strong foundation in the necessary skills to develop as a strong Martial Artist and setting our members on the path to attaining their coveted Black Belt and beyond that with additional skills and knowledge to become a junior coach and maybe one day lead a class of their own.

Becoming a Martial Artist
A Winchester Martial Artist doesn’t learn to be a good Martial Artist just by attending their two classes each week. They become a Martial Artists by learning and then developing their ‘black belt attitude’ and ‘black belt mindset,’ even from their very first lesson.
Developing mental attributes to help you to achieve success in life, work, academically and in sport is an integral part of being a great practictioner of the Martial Arts.
In our Young Legends children’s Karate classes, we have a number of key themes that we explore and discuss together including:

Concentration
The ability to focus on a task and see it through is a vital skill for success in both school and everyday life. In our martial arts classes, children learn how to manage distractions, stay attentive, and complete tasks with confidence and purpose.
Through their training, they develop the ability to remain calm and composed under pressure, building both mental resilience and self-control. In Japanese martial arts, this state is known as Zanshin—a mindset of relaxed awareness and focused readiness that supports better performance in all areas of life.
Courage
Developing courage is an important part of every child’s growth. It’s about having the confidence to try new things, push through challenges, and keep going even when something feels difficult. In our martial arts classes, children are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment.
We teach that true courage goes beyond physical bravery. Children learn to build emotional courage by managing their feelings, social courage by being confident in who they are, intellectual courage by trying new ideas, and moral courage by doing what is right. These skills help them grow into confident, resilient individuals both in and out of the dojo.
Intensity
Intensity plays an important role in martial arts training, helping children learn how to apply the right level of focus and energy in different situations. Whether it’s concentrating during a kata (form), staying mentally engaged while learning new skills, or performing techniques with speed and precision, children develop the ability to give their best when it matters most.
Our classes teach children how to balance control with effort—understanding when to stay calm and focused, and when to apply power and intensity. This builds discipline, sharpens concentration, and helps children develop a strong, positive approach to challenges both in training and everyday life.
Perseverance
Achieving the level of a senior black belt is built on persistence, patience and a determined mindset. It’s a journey that challenges students both physically and mentally, encouraging them to stay committed even when things become difficult.
Through consistent training, children develop resilience, self-discipline and a powerful “never give up” attitude. These qualities extend far beyond martial arts, helping them overcome challenges, build confidence and succeed in all areas of life.
Flexibility
The ability to adapt, adjust and make good decisions under pressure is a key quality of strong leadership. In our martial arts classes, children begin developing these skills from an early age, learning how to respond positively to challenges and think clearly in different situations.
Alongside this, training helps improve physical flexibility, supporting healthy movement and reducing the risk of muscle and joint injuries. This combination of mental adaptability and physical development builds confident, capable children who are better prepared for both sport and everyday life.
Speed
The ability to make quick, accurate decisions is a valuable skill that benefits children in many areas of life. In our martial arts classes, students learn how to think clearly under pressure, improving both their reactions and confidence in challenging situations.
Through structured drills and skill-based training, children develop speed, precision and high-quality technique. This not only supports success in competitions, but also builds sharp focus, coordination and decision-making skills that carry through into school and everyday life.
Agility
The ability to adapt quickly—both physically and mentally—is an essential skill in today’s fast-paced world. In our children’s karate classes, students learn how to move with speed, control and coordination, developing agility through structured drills and partner-based activities.
As they train, children improve their ability to change direction efficiently, react quickly and move with confidence. These skills not only enhance their performance in martial arts, but also support success in other sports and everyday activities.
Technique
Through consistent regular practice, children first develop strong technical skills, then refine and improve them over time. Our martial arts training focuses on correct movement and technique, helping students build a solid foundation they can progress with confidently.
By understanding how their body moves and works during each technique, children improve performance while also reducing the risk of injury. These principles of movement and body awareness support not only martial arts, but success across a wide range of sports and physical activities.
