Junior Martial Arts students practicing techniques under the guidance of a professional instructor at Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester, we believe that the quality of a student’s journey is directly linked to the quality of the person standing at the front of the mat. When you walk into our full-time facility in Winnall, Winchester, you are not just entering a gym; you are entering a structured educational environment backed by over 35 years of history and a coaching team with more than 250 years of combined expertise. One of the questions we are often asked by parents and prospective adult members is where we find such high-calibre instructors. The answer is simple: we build them ourselves.

We do not look for external shortcuts. Every coach who leads a session at our academy has been through a rigorous internal development process. This commitment to training our own ensures that the culture, technical standards, and safety protocols remain consistent across every discipline we offer. Whether you are interested in Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, or Judo, the person teaching you has been moulded by the Shin Gi Tai philosophy from the ground up.

The foundation: The Junior Leadership Academy

The journey towards excellence often begins much earlier than people expect. We believe that leadership is a skill that can be taught, nurtured, and refined. This is why we established the Junior Leadership Academy (JLA), a specialized program designed for children between the ages of eight and fourteen.

The JLA is not just about learning how to kick or punch more effectively; it is a comprehensive life-skills curriculum. We teach these young leaders a range of soft skills including; self discipline, integrity, courtesy, self control, respect, Black Belt confidence, positive attitude. Each of these is worked through in depth. For example how to communicate with confidence. This includes how to talk to a room full of people, how to manage a group’s attention, and how to project a voice that commands respect without being aggressive. These are skills that many adults struggle with, yet we see our JLA students mastering them before they even reach secondary school.

We focus heavily on the art of making a first impression. We discuss how you stand, how you talk, and how you act when meeting new people. We even delve into the nuances of presentation: what you wear and the tone of voice you use. As parents, you know that these skills are invaluable for the future. Whether it is a college interview or a meeting with a university professor, the ability to present oneself professionally is a competitive advantage that stays with a child for life.

Goal setting and milestone mastery

We teach our young leaders how to look at the short term, such as what they want to achieve within a year, and then bridge that to their long-term aspirations. However, a goal without a plan is just a dream. That is why we teach them how to break those goals down into smaller targets and manageable milestones.

This methodical approach to progress is a core tenet of Martial Arts training, but by making it an explicit part of our coaching development, we ensure our future coaches understand the psychology of success. They learn that mastery is a journey of small, consistent wins. This mindset allows them to help other students navigate their own challenges, turning potential frustrations into opportunities for growth and kinetic chain integration.

Belts at Winchester Martial Arts SchoolThe junior coach, modelling excellence

Once a student has progressed through the JLA, they have the opportunity to become a junior coach. This is a pivotal role within Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester. The junior coach’s responsibility is to be in the class with younger students and serve as a living example of what good looks like.

For instance, you might see Josh demonstrating a technically perfect roundhouse kick. When Josh performs, the instructors point out the key technical details: the pivot of the foot, the chambering of the knee, and the reactive agility required to return to a stable stance. Or you might see Orlagh leading a group through the Kickboxing form, which is a series of moves designed to help members remember fundamental skills. Both showing the younger children that high-level skill is entirely feasible and achievable through dedication.

This peer-to-peer modelling is incredibly powerful. It provides younger students with relatable role models and gives our junior coaches a deep sense of responsibility. They learn that their actions and their technical precision matter because others are looking to them for guidance. It also gives the junior coach real world experience of leading something and

Professional adult coaching and Sport England standards

Sports Coaching Teaching Qualification

As our students transition into adulthood, the coaching path becomes even more rigorous. Our adult coaching program is a multi-year journey that takes an individual from an assistant coach to a lead instructor, and potentially even to leading a program or to leading one of our locations.

Professionalism is at the heart of everything we do. All of our coaches are required to obtain a professionally Sport England endorsed coaching qualification. This is not a simple certificate of attendance; it is a comprehensive validation of their ability to teach safely and effectively. This qualification ensures that every instructor has deep knowledge of safeguarding, safe training practices, and the physiological requirements of a session, including proper warm-ups and cool-downs.

Our instructors are trained to work with a wide range of individuals, including those with additional needs. These might be physical requirements or emotional challenges. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive academy where every individual is treated with respect and given the support they need to thrive. Our coaches understand how to educate and inform, adapting their style to suit the person in front of them rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

The technical foundation of our coaching is as robust as the pedagogical one. Our Children’s and Adult’s syllabus were designed with self protection in mind and cover long and mid range skills plus close quarter grappling with techniques drawn from Karate, Kung Fu and Judo. Adults can also learn Muay Thai from Thailand, Our Ladies Only classes learn Chinese Kickboxing and for those wanting to look at a more relaxed form of exercise Yang Style Tai Chi.

Because our coaches are trained across these diverse disciplines, they develop a holistic understanding of movement. They learn about proprioception (body awareness), multi-planar movement, and how the body works as a whole through kinetic chain integration. This deep technical mastery is what allows our instructors to provide a service that is both engaging and safe as well as being useful.

The Shin Gi Tai standard

They possess the rare combination of technical skill and the ability to communicate that knowledge effectively to others. We don’t just rely on the skills or knowledge of one person, we have a whole team of properly qualified teachers, to help our members in their Martial Arts journey and whose knowledge shared is a very powerful coaching tool. Many of our coaches have a long history with us stretching back over 20 years, as both members and coaches, so they have a deep understanding of what we do and how we do it.

When you visit us in Winchester, you will see this in action. Our waiting area is designed so that family members can watch the class, allowing you to see first-hand the level of engagement and professional conduct our coaches maintain. You will see them managing the energy of the room, providing individual feedback, and fostering an environment where every student feels empowered to push their boundaries.

We view coaching as a lifelong commitment to learning. Even our most senior instructors, with decades of experience, continue to refine their skills and update their knowledge.
