If you have ever tried to get your child’s attention while they are deep in a game of Minecraft or watching a stray cat out the window during homework time, you know that focus can feel like a rare superpower. As parents, we often find ourselves repeating the same instructions three, four, or maybe ten times before it finally sinks in. It is not that they are not listening; it is just that the world is a very distracting place, especially in a city like Winchester where there is always something going on.

At Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester, we see focus a little differently. It is not just about staring at a book or sitting still until your legs fall asleep. True focus is a skill that can be practiced, honed, and eventually mastered. It is the difference between a student who feels overwhelmed by a classroom task and one who can lock in and get the job done.

What Does Focus Actually Look Like

In the world of Japanese martial arts, we talk about two big concepts: Kamae and Zanshin. Now, don’t worry, there won’t be a pop quiz on the terminology. Think of Kamae as your physical posture. It is how you stand and how you carry yourself. When your body is ready, your mind usually follows suit. A great way to think of Kamae, is that it’s a physical manifestation of your mind / mental awareness.

Zanshin is even cooler. It is a state of relaxed awareness. It is not a panicked, hyper-focused stare, but rather a calm readiness. Imagine a cat watching a bird. The cat is not tense, but it is absolutely aware of everything moving in its field of vision. That is what we want for our students. Whether they are on the mats or sitting at a desk in school, we want them to have that mental and physical readiness to tackle whatever comes next.

From the Dojo to the Classroom

You might be wondering how doing a roundhouse kick helps with long division or reading comprehension. It comes down to attention practice. When a child is in one of our Martial Arts classes, they are constantly switching between different types of focus.

One minute they are listening to an instructor explain a complex movement. The next, they are practicing that movement with a partner. Then, they might be performing a solo drill that requires them to remember a sequence of ten or twelve steps. This is essentially a workout for the brain.

Research shows that this kind of structured physical activity does wonders for brain chemistry. It regulates the things that help with impulse control and concentration. For kids who are naturally high-energy or easily distracted, martial arts provides a channel for that energy. Instead of being told to sit still and stop fidgeting, they are taught how to control their movements and direct their power.

A Syllabus Built for Real Life

We don’t just teach one style and hope for the best. Our Martial Arts classes for children and adults combine Karate, Judo, and Chinese Kung Fu into a structured syllabus designed for complete self-defence. We train across all four ranges: long-range (kicking distance), mid-range (striking distance for punches), close-range (grappling, elbows, knees, and throws), and groundwork for self-defence on the floor.

Why does this matter for focus? Because each range requires a different mental gear. Long-range requires timing and spatial awareness. Close-range requires calm under pressure and quick decision-making. By training across all these styles, our students become mentally flexible. They learn how to stay focused even when the situation changes rapidly.

The Winchester Environment

Our academy is designed to support this learning journey. We have an open plan venue, which is a bit different from your standard sports hall. One of the things our parents love most is that they can watch the classes directly from the same space. There are no partitions or hidden waiting areas.

As a parent, you get to see that moment when the penny drops for your child. You see them struggle with a new throw or a tricky combination, and then you see them focus, try again, and finally nail it. We believe that seeing the process is just as important as seeing the result. It builds a sense of community where everyone is cheering each other on.

Guided by Expertise

The quality of instruction is what makes or breaks the experience. Our coaching team is led by Bryan Andrews, who has spent over 35 years dedicated to the martial arts. Bryan is not just someone who knows how to kick; he is a professional educator with a deep understanding of how people learn.

Bryan’s credentials speak for themselves:

  • 7th Dan Karate
  • 7th Degree Kung Fu
  • Shikon England national Karate squad coach
  • National level Tai Chi teacher
  • 3rd Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate
  • Black Belts in Yoshinkan Aikido and Judo

Beyond the belts, Bryan holds a Masters degree in Advanced Sport Coaching Practice (Level 7) from Sheffield Hallam University. He also holds a BJA Level 5 Coaching award, a UKCC Level 4 coaching award, and a BCCMA Level 3 coaching qualification. He even serves as a tutor for the BCCMA, training other coaches to reach level 1 and level 2 standards. When your child is on the mats at Shin Gi Tai Martial Arts Academy in Winchester, they are learning from one of the most qualified instructor teams in the country.

Fall Down Seven Times Get Up Eight

There is an old Japanese proverb that says, fall down seven times, get up eight. This is the heart of resilience and focus. In our classes, we don’t look at mistakes as failures. If a student loses their balance or forgets a step in a form, that is just more data for their brain to process.

We encourage our students to view their journey as one of constant learning and mastering. It is not about being perfect on day one. It is about being slightly more focused today than you were yesterday. We use motivational metaphors and real-world examples to keep things engaging. If a child can focus long enough to build a complex castle in Minecraft, we know they have the capacity for greatness. We just help them transfer that same laser-like focus to things like schoolwork, self-discipline, and physical fitness.

The Success Spiral

When a child starts to see the results of their focus, something amazing happens. They get a boost of confidence. That confidence makes them more likely to try hard in other areas, like school or other hobbies. This creates a positive spiral of success.

We celebrate the small wins. Whether it is earning a new stripe on a belt or finally mastering a PNF stretching routine to improve their high kicks, every achievement is a building block for their self-esteem.

Focus is not something you either have or you don’t. It is a muscle. And just like any other muscle, it gets stronger with the right training. We are here to help your child build that strength, one class at a time.
